All potential or interested adopters must fill out the attached application in order to be considered for adoption. The application must
be submitted to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department Livestock or Animal Control division by May 12th. Any applications
submitted after this date will not be accepted.
All applicants must go through a pre-approval process in order to adopt any of the horses. A facility inspection and reference check
will also be preformed. You must be pre-approved in order to submit a bid on any of the horses.
The viewing schedule for the horses available for adoption will be as follows:
Saturday, May 10th
Ferndale Fairgrounds @ 10 am and 2 pm
Fortuna Rodeo Grounds @ 12 am and 4 pm
Sunday, May 11th
Ferndale Fairgrounds @ 10 am and 2 pm
Fortuna Rodeo Grounds @ 12 am and 4 pm
Wednesday, May 14th
Ferndale Fairgrounds @ 5 pm
Fortuna Rodeo Grounds @ 7 pm
A “closed bid” auction will be held, and the right of adoption will be awarded to the highest, approved bidder.
Bids on the horses will be accepted at the Humboldt County Animal Shelter in McKinleyville and at the Humboldt County Sheriff’s
Office in Eureka. The bids may be submitted by mail or in person but will only be accepted from May 19th through May 22nd. All
bids must be received by the close of business on May 22nd any bids received after this date will not be accepted. All bids must be
submitted on the approved form provided to the adopter and in a sealed envelope.
Adopters may not sell the horse for a period of one year and shall submit a written statement that you are adopting the horse for
personal use and not for the purposes of resale, resale for slaughter, or holding or transporting the horse for slaughter.
The minimum bid for each of the horses is $200. Mares in foal or with a foal will be adopted as a pair and the bidder shall submit one
bid for the pair.
Follow up inspections can/will be performed at the Sheriff’s Office discretion, at any time, and without notice.
Adopters must notify the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office within five (5) business days of death or relocation of the horse.
The adopter understands and acknowledges that the horses will be adopted “as is”, and have not been given a complete physical
examination by a veterinarian.
The adopter acknowledges that the County of Humboldt, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office has not made through its agents,
volunteers, or employees, any warranties regarding the current or future condition, temperament, or conduct of the horses.
